From advertising
to the abyss.

The story of how a London advertising executive became one of ocean conservation's most impactful voices — and what it took to get the world to look down.

About

Richard Vevers

Richard Vevers is a leader in innovative ocean science communication and a passionate advocate for the ocean and ocean science. He is the Director of the ground-breaking Room 71 at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the world's leading non-profit dedicated to ocean science and exploration — working with leading brands to flip beliefs about the ocean and accelerate ocean science solutions to global issues.

His work, including his imagery, ideas, projects, and public speaking, has made him a powerful voice in ocean science communication and a leading campaigner for ocean conservation. Richard's work has been featured in over 10,000 media articles and numerous books and documentaries. He played the lead role in the Emmy Award-winning documentary Chasing Coral on Netflix, which exposed the devastating effects of climate change on coral reefs. Overall, his work has resulted in over $200 million in funding for ocean science and conservation initiatives, particularly in the protection of coral reefs, through projects such as 50 Reefs.

Richard's unique impact-driven approach to ocean science communication stems from his diverse background. Prior to his work in ocean science, he gained a decade of experience in top London advertising agencies before working as an artist, gallery owner, exhibition designer, and underwater photographer. This creative, business-driven background shapes his ability to develop innovative communication strategies that not only create awareness but action and lasting impact.

Richard is also an experienced diver and expedition leader. He is a Fellow of The Explorers Club, having embarked on numerous remote expeditions to take Google Street View underwater and carry out the first comprehensive global survey of the world's coral reefs. He simply loves the ocean and being underwater, especially with his wife and creative partner, Stephanie.
